Image copyright AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL Image caption Taner Kilic denied using an encrypted messaging app The indicted head of Amnesty International in Turkey, Taner Kilic, has denied alleged membership of the "terrorist" group blamed for the July 2016 coup attempt. Mr Kilic was speaking at the opening of his trial in Izmir, western Turkey. He has been in custody since June, accused of links to Fethullah Gulen, the US-based Muslim cleric seen by President Erdogan as a subversive traitor. Eight other human rights activists were released on bail on Wednesday. Mr Kilic is also a defendant in that separate case, in which activists face similar terrorism charges. Amnesty says the charges are politically motivated - an attempt to silence critics of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has cracked down hard on opponents since the coup attempt. "There are inconcrete and unclear accusations in the indictment, and there is no concrete evidence" to prove any links...

Nazi forums closed as Reddit purges 'violent content'

Image
Image copyright AFP Image caption Nazi rallies in the US have prompted counter-protests recently Reddit has closed down several extremist forums after updating its policy regarding violent content. The newly banned and removed pages include r/NationalSocialism, r/Nazi, r/whitesarecriminals and r/far_right. Reddit's new policy  says: "Do not post content that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual or a group of people." One legal expert has said the policy may be difficult to enforce. The updated policy notes that violent content may sometimes be posted as part of educational, newsworthy or artistic material but adds that the context and reason for posting such content should be made clear. Material that glorifies or encourages the abuse of animals, such as bestiality, is also now being removed. In 2015, Reddit  updated its policy to deter harassment  - a move that resulted in the shutting down of forums...

Soldiers, police, Sunni tribesmen and mostly Shia paramilitary fighters are taking part in the assault on al-Qaim and Rawa, in the Euphrates river valley close to the border with Syria. The prime minister told IS militants to "choose between death and surrender". The jihadists still control part of the Euphrates valley in the neighbouring Syrian province of Deir al-Zour. But they are under pressure there from Syrian pro-government forces and a US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters who recently took the city of Raqqa.
