Lightning storm blazes across Queensland skies

Image copyright ALEX GREGG Severe storms have brought heavy rain and a spectacle of lightning to Australia's Queensland, with lightning bolts ripping across the night skies for hours. There were over 176,000 lightning strikes overnight - with more expected on Monday. Queensland's bureau of Meteorology has warned of more "severe thunderstorms", "damaging winds and large hailstones". The storm damaged a number of houses and left thousands without power. The turbulent weather had photographers and storm chasers glued to the skies, with many capturing stunning shots of the lightning strikes. Row over German high-speed train called Anne Frank

Anne Frank's name is among those of 25 famous Germans chosen by a jury after a public consultation. A German conservative MP, Iris Eberl,  tweeted  that it was a "tasteless" choice, as Anne Frank and other Jews had been sent by train to their deaths. But DB spokesperson Antje Neubauer said the girl was a symbol of tolerance. Anne Frank also represented "peaceful co-existence of different cultures, which is more important than ever in times such as this", she said. The Diary of Anne Frank is a global bestseller, describing the Jewish girl's life in hiding with her family in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam in World War Two. The Frank family were deported to Auschwitz death camp in 1944, and Anne died later in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at

NBC and MSNBC sack Mark Halperin over harassment allegations

The allegations relate to Mr Halperin's work at ABC more than a decade ago. Penguin Press has cancelled a book co-authored by Mr Halperin about the 2016 election, and HBO has cancelled a planned TV adaptation of the book. The Showtime network said Mr Halperin would not return to political programme The Circus. which will be renamed. At least 12 women have come forward to report that Mr Halperin harassed or assaulted them during his stint as political director at ABC News.
