The Japanese film Brave Storm, set to be released in November, is not likely to break new ground in the "giant robots battling each other while a city is destroyed around them" genre. But it has attracted attention in Kyrgyzstan after it emerged there that the bad guys are called the "Kyrgyz",  Kaktus Media reports . The plot, which appears to borrow elements from The Terminator and Pacific Rim franchises, revolves around the last survivors of the human race travelling back in time from 2050 to build combat robots to fight the invading Kyrgyz alien race. Although it is unclear why the film's villains have been named as such, social media users in Kyrgyzstan have receive...

Kenya election: No clear road ahead after run-off vote

Image
Image copyright AFP Image caption Protesters in Kisumu, western Kenya, barricaded roads and burned debris and tyres during the election The re-run of Kenya's presidential election has taken place, but early signs are the overall turnout has been far lower than the first poll which was annulled by the Supreme Court. The legitimacy of this election was being questioned even before the voting began, but if the 46% of the country who voted for the opposition last time have failed to turn up, the whole process will be further undermined. Kisumu, like other parts of western Kenya, is an opposition stronghold and very few - if any - votes have been cast here. The returning officer at Kisumu Central constituency tallying centre cut a lonely figure. He and just two other Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials turned up for work - out of the 400 who should have been running the poll here. The ballot boxes hadn't arrived by 07:00, but were then dr...

Image copyright REUTERS Image caption Twitter is to donate all money earned from the outlets Twitter is banning two of Russia's biggest media outlets from buying advertising amid fears they attempted to interfere with the 2016 US election. The ban on advertising from Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik, and all linked accounts, was "effective immediately". US authorities say both act as "a platform for Kremlin messaging". The social media giant will donate an estimated $1.9m (£1.4m) made from the outlets into research on Twitter's use in "civic engagement and elections". Twitter promises more ad transparency Twitter said the decision "was based on the retrospective work we've been doing around the 2016 US election and the US intelligence community's conclusion that both RT and Sputnik attempted to interfere with the election on behalf of the Russian government". The statement, published on the social media platform'...

Trump: Opioid 'national shame' a public health emergency

Image
Media caption "I learned because of Fred," Trump said of his brother, who was addicted to alcohol US President Donald Trump has called America's painkiller-addiction crisis a "national shame" as he declared it a public health emergency. Mr Trump announced a plan to target the abuse of opioids, which kill more than 140 Americans each day. The president has previously promised to declare a national emergency, which would have triggered federal funding to help states combat the drug scourge. The move instead redirects grant money to be used in dealing with the crisis. Five ways to tackle the US drug epidemic Mr Trump said on Thursday at the White House: "More people are dying from drug overdoses today than from gun homicides and motor vehicles combined. "These overdoses are driven by a massive increase in addiction to prescription painkillers, heroin and other opioids." He added: "The United States is by fa...
