The Latest: Dozens arrested after St. Louis vandalism

Image
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Latest on protests over the acquittal of a white former St. Louis police officer in the killing of a black suspect (all times local): 11:50 p.m. Police made dozens of arrests in downtown St. Louis when people ignored orders to disperse after a third night of vandalism that followed largely nonviolent daylight protests. Police had warned those still on downtown streets late Sunday that they would be arrested if they didn’t leave the area. Sunday’s protest began at the police headquarters downtown. Following the same pattern of the previous days, well over 1,000 people marched peacefully for several hours in the afternoon and early evening. By nightfall, most had gone home. The 100 or so demonstrators who remained grew increasingly agitated as they marched toward the core of downtown. Along the way, they began to knock over planters, broke windows at a few shops and hotels, scattered plastic chairs at an outdoor venue. St. Louis Protesters March...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Latest on the Emmy Awards, presented Sunday in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theater (all times local): 9:50 p.m. The main attraction at the Governors Ball after the Emmy Awards is the bar, but not the kind you’re thinking about. Sterling K. Brown and Alec Baldwin made a beeline for the trophy-engraving bar after the main show ended Sunday night. The official Emmys after party is often the first stop for show guests. Both Baldwin and Brown brought their newly won statuettes to the on-site engraving station to have them personalized. The two later bonded over some secret texts and embraced. Meanwhile, Sarah Paulson shed her shoes as she chatted with Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange. Donald Glover, who kept one of his Emmys on his chair and another on the table, celebrated the moment by hugging his co-star Brian Tyree Henry. — Sandy Cohen, @APSandy on Twitter ___ 8:54 p.m. The trophy table where Emmy winners pick up their statuettes sparks som...

‘Veep’ and ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ win top Emmy Award prizes

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The dystopian vision of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the deeply cynical Washington comedy “Veep” and the ever-topical “Saturday Night Live” won top series honors Sunday in an Emmy Awards ceremony that took almost nonstop aim at President Donald Trump in awards and speeches. “Go home, get to work, we have a lot of things to fight for,” producer Bruce Miller said in accepting the best drama trophy for “A Handmaid’s Tale,” which also won best drama writing and directing awards and a best actress trophy for Elisabeth Moss. A beaming Margaret Atwood, the Canadian author whose 1985 novel is the show’s source, was onstage. Sterling K. Brown, whose role in “This Is Us” earned him the top drama series actor trophy, paid tribute to the last African-American man to win in the category, Andre Braugher in 1998 for his role as a police detective in “Homicide: Life on the Street.” “Nineteen years ago, Detective Frank Pemberton held this joint,” Brown, hoisting his Emmy and cal...

Interior secretary recommends shrinking 6 national monuments

Image
WASHINGTON (AP) — Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is recommending that six of 27 national monuments under review by the Trump administration be reduced in size, with changes to several others proposed. A leaked memo from Zinke to President Donald Trump recommends that two Utah monuments - Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante — be reduced, along with Nevada’s Gold Butte and Oregon’s Cascade-Siskiyou. Two marine monuments in the Pacific Ocean also would be reduced under Zinke’s memo, which has not been officially released. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the memo, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Trump ordered the review earlier this year after complaining about improper “land grabs” by former presidents, including Barack Obama. National monument designations add protections for lands revered for their natural beauty and historical significance with the goal of preserving them for future generations. The restrictions aren’t as stringent as natio...

Politics and Sean Spicer take center stage at Emmy Awards

Image
NEW YORK (AP) — Weeks after leaving his job, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer was onstage at the Emmy Awards on Sunday joking about one of his first — and more dubious — claims from the press room. Host Stephen Colbert, playing the straight man in his opening monologue, said it was difficult to tell how many people would be watching the show. At that point, Spicer wheeled a podium onto the Los Angeles stage. “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys period, both in person and around the world,” Spicer said. The reference was to his Inauguration Day claims, contradicted by photos, about how big the audience was for President Donald Trump’s oath of office. “Wow,” Colbert replied. “That really soothes my fragile ego.” Even without Spicer’s surprise appearance, politics couldn’t help but make its way onto the Emmy Awards stage, especially since Colbert noted that Trump was the biggest TV star of the year. Spicer’s joke rubbed several people the...

Trump’s week anchored by speech to UN General Assembly

Image
NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump is making his debut at the United Nations and taking his complaints about the world body straight to the source. In his first appearance as president, Trump on Monday was addressing a U.S.-sponsored event on reforming the 193-member organization he has sharply criticized. As a candidate for president, Trump labeled the U.N. as weak and incompetent, and not a friend of either the United States or Israel. But he has softened his tone since taking office, telling ambassadors from U.N. Security Council member countries at a White House meeting this year that the U.N. has “tremendous potential.” Trump more recently has praised a pair of unanimous council votes to tighten sanctions on North Korea over its continued nuclear weapon and ballistic missile tests. Trump and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will speak at the meeting. The U.S. has asked member nations to sign a declaration on U.N. reforms, and more than 100 have done so. The...

The Latest: Alvarez and Golovkin fight to brutal draw

Image
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Latest on the Genady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez middleweight title fight (all times local): 9:04 p.m. Gennady Golovkin retained his middleweight titles Saturday night, fighting to a draw with Canelo Alvarez in a brutal battle that ended with both fighters with their hands aloft in victory. The middleweight showdown lived up to its hype as the two fighters traded huge punches and went after each other for 12 rounds. Neither fighter was down and neither appeared seriously hurt, but both landed some huge punches to the head that had the crowd screaming in excitement. Golovkin was the aggressor throughout but couldn’t put Alvarez down, and Alvarez more than stood his own in exchanges with Triple G. The two were still brawling as the final seconds ticked down and the fight went to the scorecards. One judge had Alvarez winning 118-110, a second had it 115-113 in Golovkin’s favor, while the third had it 114-114. The Associated Press scored it 114-114. ___ ...
